A Brief Introduction To The LEGO® Castle Series
Way, way back in 1932, Ole Kirk Christiansen established his business of making stepladders, ironing boards and wooden toys in the town of Billund in Denmark. Obviously Mr. Christiansen is in for a very big, surprise as his company reaches greater heights on 1955 wherein his modest little company from Billund, Denmark was launched as the new revolutionary system of play, aptly referred to as “LEGO®” thus starting the worldwide phenomenon in the toy industry that all of us have most probably grown up with yet still continue to love up to this very moment.
Through the years, LEGO® has indeed come a very, very long way from its humble beginnings. It spawned many different play sets as well as a long list of other merchandise. Parents love it because of the charming nostalgia that it brings as well as the educational and non-violent approach the company has towards playing, kids however love the fact that these toys have limitless possibilities wherein they are able to let their imaginations soar and just let loose with the colorful building blocks and challenging play sets and themes.
There is certainly a LEGO® play kit that is sure to capture anyone’s fancy, may it be the increasingly popular adult-catered, LEGO® Mindstorm to the preschool type Dora the Explorer up to the cult classic, LEGO® Castle Series, there’s really no stopping these block toys from charming the pants off anyone.
Some time in the late 1970’s, the LEGO® company started coming out with play sets that have specific “themes” which proved to be quite a hit with its growing market, it’s first actual themed play kit were the “Space” and “Town” sets. However, back in 1981, the LEGO® Company introduced its very first LEGO® Castle Series, a play set which included a large yellow castle, a joust and tiny people figures – knights to be precise, with either gray or black helmets who are small enough to enter the “big” castle. The first themed play set in the LEGO® Castle Series is actually referred to plainly as just “castle” while the second play set in the Castle Series carried the name, “knight’s tournament” while the third one to come along in the LEGO® Castle Series was called the “knight’s procession”.
As they developed the LEGO® Castle Series further, to be able to improve its looks, the opted to scrap the first three play sets in its LEGO® Castle Series lineup and start over again with fresher, newer LEGO® Castle Series play sets. A noticeable improvement is how they came up with “walls” in place of the little bricks that used to make up the “big yellow castle”, since they took a pretty long time to make, LEGO® decided to end everyone’s misery by creating the easy to work with walls for its highly popular LEGO® Castle Series.
Starting off with the renovation of the LEGO® Castle Series is the play set called “king’s castle” wherein LEGO® put in two gray castles in the play kit where along with the famous two different emblems that the castles bore as well as the knights’ shields and flags. This proved to be an instant hit among the Castle Series collectors who loved the idea that they were given the option to increase their “armies” by buying supplementary sets such as the “siege tower” and the “catapult” which contained knights, soldiers or soldier escorts.
That was the start of very lucrative and journey for the LEGO® Castle Series which gave such pleasure and delight to its adoring fans through the years.
